Journal Entry: May 8th, 2016 #TheRealJourney is About to Begin

A Letter for Emerson Rae

The day I found out that one major journey was ending, learning to walk again after a horrific car accident, another immediately began. Literally within a half-hour.

On a sunny afternoon in February, I left my orthopedic surgeon’s office in positive spirits as he had cleared me with full approval to get back to normal life again, with the caveat that there was to be no running marathons in the near future. I told him that wouldn’t be a problem as I had never been a runner. Smiling, he said I could stow away my walker and cane, drive, get back to work, and go for long walks – all the things I had been working hard on for nearly six months to gain my independence back. With a big smile he told me to accept this appointment as my last and to consider myself “graduated.” With that, he outstretched his hand towards me and I in turn extended my own hand back. After a firm, hardy handshake of thanks, I left his office for the last time.

On my way home, I hit the drugstore for an item that was to clear my mind from a nagging question that had crashed into my mind that morning like the Corvette had hit the tree head-on last October. It was really more so to squash that silly gut feeling and to confirm that trusting my instincts was like over-reacting to a tiny shadow out of the corner of your eye.  “It’s all in your mind,” I kept telling myself, knowing that my gut instincts were usually spot on.

Fifteen minutes later, I was staring at a very large blue plus sign that shook me to my core, put me to my knees in tears, and brought my entire world – past, present, and future – into very sharp focus in one split second. And you know what?

She is going to be my greatest adventure.

(best if listened to with headphones)

My love poem to Emerson Rae (video subtitles):

Your heartbeat
Am I ready for this?
You are going to be my greatest adventure

You have been my heart’s greatest desire for 40 years
I’ve wanted you all my life
That you are in me is a blessing
That you will be here soon is a gift from God

I’m so excited to walk the beach with you
To teach you to swim
To see your hair blowing in the wind
To touch your lips

To watch your toes
Step one foot in front of the other

Live in the Sunshine
Swim the Sea
Drink the Wild Air*
[*Ralph Waldo Emerson]

You are so loved
Emerson Rae

You were conceived with intent and out of love

*Original Poem by my relative, Ralph Waldo Emerson
Live in the Sunshine
Swim the Sea
Drink the Wild Air

Thanks for taking the time to read my journey here on!
