We Will Love You

For Emerson:

As we wait for you day after day, we are each in our own minds swimming with so many thoughts and ideas wondering what our life will be like once you arrive in our arms.

During the last nine months we have each spent time alone, and together, working on becoming better people so that we can give to you wholeheartedly and without regret or reserve. And you know what? We are ready and can’t wait for you to be here with us. Now, no matter how much work we do, we are not perfect and never will be, but there are a few things we can promise you.

We will love you, individually. We will love you, together. There is nothing you can say or do that will take away the unconditional love we have for you.

We will pick you up when you fall. As you grow older and learn to pick yourself up, we will be your loudest cheering squad.

We will have your back and go to battle for you. When it is time to fight your own battles, we will be in your corner with advice and wisdom.

We will celebrate with you, all the smallest and largest happenings in your life. And although memories can be captured in an image, it is in your heart and soul where the memory of a life celebration truly belongs. Embrace the elated joy, experience the togetherness, and remember the event in your heart always. Your father will probably say, “Put the camera down,” and he’ll be right.

We are not morning people. At all. So if you end up being a bright and cheerful Morningbird, we will listen to your songs with joy and greet the day in positive spirits with you. Usually with a very large cup of coffee in hand, which I’ll teach you how to make for us in a few years.

We are going to mess up. A lot. Learn not how we mess up, but how we pick ourselves up, make amends, and fix it.

We will succeed in a lot of ways. Take notes of how many times we failed before succeeding little Morningbird, because success only comes after the struggles.

We will teach you to risk in faith. It does take faith to take big steps in life, it is scary to do and there is risk involved, but there is affirmation in success if you are on the right path. God continues to affirm, affirm, affirm. Do everything you can do to follow God’s criteria, and He is faithful every time. Your grandfather taught me that.

We will encourage you to “always do what you are afraid to do.” Your great-uncle namesake said that. When faced with something that scares you, we will help you meet it head on to overcome the fear and to grow above it in strength.

We will show you kindness, empathy, and compassion in all things as these are the most important and valuable qualities you can possess in life and give to others.

We will figure it all out as we go along together. Because there isn’t a perfect recipe for life, we will help you discover the many incredible ingredients you can select for your own. “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” The choices will be yours.

We will be with you on this journey with love.
